First Biology Study Center starts this fall semester

For the first time this fall semester, CAL organizes the Biology Study Center where ETH biology students can discuss lecture contents and work on class assignments, assisted by lecturers and teaching assistants. Starting on September 27, the study center takes place between and after lectures each Wednesday and Thursday at Hönggerberg.
Latest ETH Globe issue focusses on active learning at ETH Zurich
Innovative teaching is one of the explicite goals of the ETH education strategy. To that end, teaching approaches fostering active learning are strongly encouraged by the rectorate. The latest issue of the ETH Globe is therefore dedicated to this topic; innovative teaching concepts in different departements are presented. The course Fundamentals of Biology IA, developed by CAL, serves as an example for the implementation of a flipped-classroom approach.
Sharing teaching approaches across universities at 'Tag der Lehre' of the University of Bern

Jennifer Schmitz presented one teaching example from D-BIOL at the 'Tag der Lehre' of the University of Bern. Her talk focussed on the implementation of a flipped-classroom approach in the lecture Fundamentals of Biology IA, a lecture with 550 students where CAL introduced several active-learning elements, such as group exercises.
